Paleo and Keto diets have long been followed by people aiming to lose weight and remain healthy. These diets have some similarities and differences too. The key differences between Paleo diet and keto diet are as follows:
Paleo Diet Isn’t Necessarily Low-Carb and High-Fat
The Paleo diet restricts your consumption of grains, legumes, and refined sugar. It does not provide any particular restrictions on the amount of carbohydrates which you can consume when it comes to fruits and starchy vegetables. Natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, etc. can also be consumed in a Paleo diet which are known to be rich in carbohydrates. When you are on a Paleo diet, your body will continue burning glucose as its energy source, since there are no restrictions on cutting your carbohydrate consumption. Keto diet is a strict low-carb and high-fat diet. It requires you to reduce your carbohydrate consumption to less than 5% of the total calorie intake. It requires your body to enter into ketosis, where it burns stored fatty acids instead of glucose for its energy requirements.
Keto Diet Doesn’t Restrict Dairy
Paleo diet strictly removes any form of dairy and dairy product consumption. It assumes that dairy is a common food intolerance as some people do not produce sufficient lactase to digest dairy products. Keto diet, on the other hand, does not restrict consumption of dairy products. Full-fat dairy products can be consumed while being on a keto diet.
Keto diet is very particular and specific about the macronutrient composition. You need to follow a defined macronutrient percentage for successfully entering into ketosis. The standard macronutrient composition consists of 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbohydrates. Paleo diet does not require any specific macronutrient composition. Thus, it is easier to track the keto diet.
The keto diet requires you to test for ketosis to know that you have achieved it. There are several ways to test the presence of ketones in your blood which will indicate that your body has started to burn fatty acids for its energy source. The Paleo diet does not have a specific metabolism goal and hence it is difficult to measure if you have become Paleo. There is no definitive way to know, you just know you are following a Paleo diet. Hence, keto diet is more specific and measurable which helps to track results better.
